ABB

One of the smartest cities in the world

Swedish utility company Mälarenergi is working closely together with technology leader ABB and others to develop smart city solutions with the aim of making Västerås – Sweden’s fifth largest urban area – into one of the smartest cities. These efforts are creating a more attractive and sustainable community for citizens and industry.

Mälarenergi provides a range of essential services for Västerås’ businesses and 150,000 residents, such as electricity, district heating- and cooling, water treatment and communication networks. Collaborating with ABB and other partners, the company has launched an ambitious plan to minimise its environmental impact.

The vision is that Mälarenergi’s infrastructure, from district heating to water treatment plants, will be linked together using ABB’s leading digital technology. This means the control rooms of the automation systems that manage these expansive operations are digitally connected to create an overview of operations.

Looking ahead, Mälarenergi plans to incorporate various data from the city's buildings and houses. This will enable the energy supply to be tailored to individual needs – optimising production and distribution based on customer behaviour. In addition, this will enable Mälarenergi and its customers to further lower their carbon footprint.

Smart city solutions such as these are crucial for a sustainable future. 6.3 billion people – two-thirds of the world's population – are predicted to be living in cities by 2050.
